The MGB in general
What can we say for the most successful British sports car, the MGB! Produced from 1968 to 1980, and together with the 6-cylinder, 8-cylinder and coupe (MGB GT) exceeded half a million copies. An advanced concept for the era it was designed (and with a little help in styling from Farina), it introduced the monocock frame in the kingdom of chassis, and is one of the first studies and applications of progressive crumple (deformation) zones in case of collision. It was successful also in the USA, where it sold half its production. Key points to its success were low maintenance costs, engine reliability, cornering and relatively good performance, combined with the well known torque of the in line 4-cylinder engines.
A few words for the particular example
The car was built in 1975 and is in Greece since 1980, with both state and historic number plates. It is US spec, with characteristic side indicators and triple wipers. It came into present owner’s possession in 2010, bought from a neighbor of his who had not moved the car for a decade due to health reasons. It was mechanically restored, with emphasis in brakes, rear suspension, fuel supply, engine cooling, heating, electrics. Also all parts foreign to it fitted through the years or lost were replaced, such as steering wheel, pressure and temp gauges, headrests, switches, spare wheel and additionally a quality radio of the era (becker) was fitted. During all of 2011 it was used as an everyday car, and proved its reliability. In the end of that year it was classed as historic car. It has participated in 3 classic rallies since then without any problem. It is fully functional and does not require any intervention to give the freedom of a convertible combined with quality ride, strong sensation and beauty of a typical British 2-seat roadster.
